Personal Statement

After graduating in Medicine (University of Valencia, 1978-1983) with the Extraordinary Graduation Award, and completing his postgraduate training as a resident in Radiology (1984-1987), Dr. Martí-Bonmatí obtained his Doctoral Thesis (PhD) with his work on Magnetic Resonance imaging in liver tumors (Cum Laude, 1991), obtaining the Extraordinary University Award (1991).

In 1987 he became Radiology Staff in the first University Hospital Radiology Depatment with an MR system in Spain (Dr. Peset University Hospital, Valencia). In 1995, he became Section Chief of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in this Radiology Department. Since 1997 he also serves as Head of the Radiology Department at Quirónsalud Hospital in Valencia, integrating biomedical engineering in the radiological innovation process in that center.

In 2009, Dr. Martí-Bonmatí became Chairman of the Radiology Department and Director of the Medical Imaging Department at La Fe University and Polytechnic Hospital, Valencia. This hospital is the reference center for advance treatments and complex diseases within the Valencia Community.

That same year he was designated as Radiology coordinator of the Catholic University in Valencia, and in 2011 became Professor of Radiology and supervisor at the University of Valencia. He has been up to now the Director of 49 Doctoral Thesis and End of Career Projects.

In relation to his academic activities, mention should be made of his nomination as full academic member of the Spanish Royal National Academy of Medicine (2015, in representation of Radiology). He is also Honorary member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Valencian Community (2017).

Since 2012, Dr. Marti-Bonmatí has been the founder and Director of the Research Group on Biomedical Imaging (GIBI230) within La Fe Health Research Institute, a center belonging to the Spanish Research Network at the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology. The group focuses on radiomics, imaging biomarkers and structured reporting, having a large interest also in preclinical animal imaging and calibration experiments. This group has close stablish collaborations with other research groups within the Valencia University and the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

He has co-founded QUIBIM (Quantitative Imaging Biomarkers in Medicine, QUIBIM), an innovative spin-off company from the Research Institute dedicated to medical image processing, analysis, extraction and measurement of radiomic data and imaging biomarkers to be used in clinical diagnostics, research projects and clinical trials. The group is now constituted by 12 biomedical engineers, working closely with those researchers within the Research Group on Biomedical Imaging.

His collaboration with different Spanish Biomedical Data Science Lab (IBIME), Institute of Applications of Information Technology and Advanced Communications (ITACA), Institute of Instrumentation for Molecular Imaging (I3M), European research institutes (European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR), European Imaging Biomarkers Alliance (EIBALL) and Euro-BioImaging, facilitates joint research efforts in very diverse fields. Such collaboration significantly improves the development and validation of imaging biomarkers. Some examples of static or structural biomarkers are brain cortical thickness, neuronal density of the cortex, white substance volumetry, and concrete brain areas such as the hippocampus or injuries caused by multiple sclerosis. The candidate has also worked in the evaluation of myocardial density and the quantification of wall fibrosis. Liver segmentation volumetry, the quantification of emphysema and pulmonary vascularization, joint cartilage thickness, and the microstructure, rigidity and fragility of the trabecular bone have also been the subject of study by his group. Volumes, topological parameters and fractal dimensions are standard areas in his work with these structural biomarkers.

He is a member of the Spanish National Radiology Commission (since 2014) to advice the Spanish Ministry of Health in specialty advanced education.
